GP2 was introduced in 2005 after the discontinuation of Formula 3000. Like its predecessor, GP2 has made it mandatory for all of the teams to use the same chasis, engine and tyres.

F3000 was one of the world’s most prestigious and competitive open-wheel racing series. Created in 1985, the category has become the official “feeder” series and final proving ground for drivers, before entering Formula One and has produced a number of recent/current Grand Prix stars and World Champions, including Damon Hill, Jean Alesi, David Coulthard, Juan Pablo Montoya, Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber.

GP2  is run as the main support event, at 11 European rounds of the FIA Formula One World Championship.

The cars used in GP2 all use the same equipment, the 2006 chassis was designed by Dallara Automobili. It is powered by a 4 litre V8 Renault Engine. The tyres are supplied by Bridgestone are slicks.
